Rumble Fish Original Soundtrack - Stewart Copeland.

A passagem inevitável do tempo.

Foto1: Cartaz americano do filme (Internet), Foto2: Cartaz europeu do filme (en.wikipedia.org), Foto3: coleção pessoal, Foto4: loja Modern Sound (Internet).

ENGLISH VERSION

                This is the movie that more often I´ve watched. In cinema, on vhs or dvd format. What I love in this film are various aspects: the friendship between brothers from a poor family and without horizons. The fury of the youth, with his doubts, fears, his feeling of not belonging to the society (theme also proposed in The Outsiders also by author Susan e. Hinton and filmed by Francis Coppola in 1983). The inevitable passage of time. What's gone and will not coming back - the fame of the Motorcycle Boy (played by Mickey Rourke) in whose shadow mirrors the character of his brother ... The repression, in the figure of the police officer who expects the moment of reckoning. The atypical drama end as one should not expect from American movies . My own story of life at the time (1986) with so many discoveries and innovations. Memories...

                Coppola used elements of expressionism, of the american film-noir and the French school of 60´s to create a beautiful portrait of American society in the city drowned out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was based almost entirely on the 1975 book of the same name by the young writer. Coppola was low during this period, with his Zoetrope Studios in financial difficulties. Obtained, however, positive reviews (as well as several negative). Coppola thinks this as his best and perfect film.

                Initially the Director visualized a rhythmic experiment to supplement the images. Start working  with Stewart Copeland he left the former The Police handle the trail, realizing the greatness of the drummer as a percussionist. Copeland recorded live sounds in the city and used them mixing with the score composed by him managing a software/hardware called Musync that modified time to synchronize the compositions with the action of the film. All the compositions are his except Don ´ t box me in which was composed with vocalist Stan Ridgway – who sings on the title track. The character Rusty James (played by Matt Dillon) turned out to be a theme in a song of Manic Street Preachers and also on the track "Hey Rusty" from album "Mainstream" by the Commotions and Lloyd Cole in 1987.

                The result sounds like one of the most perfect trails for the last 30 years at the movies, a unique marriage. The sound fits the images as much as the allusions to time. Minimalist at various times, jazz in other, surreal, with constraint use of guitars, piano, incursion of several embedded objects to the beat ... well, listening to this work is to remind scenes, dialogues, glances, shadows…is diving into the beauty of the seventh art as a whole. The subtlety and richness of the work is worthy of praise – was indicated to the Golden Globe (which ended up not taking) for best soundtrack of that year. See the film, review it and think seriously purchasing this masterpiece. My copy is an american one from  the defunct store Modern Sound (Rio de Janeiro) and brings on the cover the art of the European movie poster. Greetings to audiophiles and cinephiles!

                 Allmusic (AllMusic guide) gave 4 .5 (5 stars) to this album.  Photo1: American movie poster (Internet), Photo2: European movie poster (en.wikipedia.org), Photo3: personal collection, Photo4:  Modern Sound store (Internet).

A música pop perfeita parte 4: Lloyd Cole & the Commotions - Rattlesnakes (1983).

Primeiro single do trabalho.
  8. Four Flights Up : Também é rápida, lembrando a estrutura de composição típica do R.E.M.
  10. Are you ready to be heartbroken: Fecha o disco com chave de ouro e é minha preferida.

Unknown pleasures - Joy division (1979).

                Nunca fui muito fã de Joy Division. Sempre achei a banda monótona, prá baixo, Ian Curtis um cantor de segunda, músicas lúgubres. Sempre tentei entender o porquê de tanta admiração pelo nome da banda. Mas quem disse que não amadurecemos a opinião? Algumas impressões da banda me fizeram mudar e respeitar mais o Joy recentemente...como por exemplo:
                a) Eles retrataram como ninguém a Manchester dos anos 80 e a opressão que recaía no proletariado da época e toda uma década de dureza que viria sob o governo de Margareth Tatcher;

                b) Ian Curtis curtia The Doors, mas, para mim, ele foi mais poeta. Morrison tinha letras muito chapadas, hippies mesmo – e  muitas delas ficaram obsoletas dentro da era 60´s. O Joy é mais atemporal, pouca coisa soa descartável no lirismo de Curtis;
                c) A cozinha influenciou toda a geração pós-punk dos anos 80, o que não é pouco. As temáticas sombrias e os timbres foram o estopim para o som gótico. A bateria industrial de Morris, as linhas de baixo inspiradas de Hook e a guitarra hipnotizante e seca de Sumner não existiam antes deles. Some-se a isso uma influência de Kraftwerk pra lá de positiva e o estrago estava feito - escola criada para 3 décadas de música pop;

                d) Os temas de solidão, introspecção, visões urbanas, símbolos de opressão de massas – como o nazismo – e forças demolidoras das grandes cidades terminaram por me conquistar. Poucas bandas conseguiram soar tão inovadoras em seu tempo, esta é que é a verdade.

                Acabei por me ater às impressões das letras para escrever este review, já que muito se sabe da arte da capa – que acabou virando um ícone pop - ,da sonoridade e da história da banda. Comprei o álbum influenciado pelos depoimentos do documentário da banda de 2007 (essencial) e pelo mistério que acompanhou a banda, muitos esclarecidos recentemente pelas publicações de Deborah Curtis e outros escritores. E saí atrás das letras do álbum de estréia, pois são raras as edições deste álbum que contenham as ditas cujas.

                Day of The Lords me remete ao nazismo, mas também pode ser a perda da inocência da juventude, jogos juvenis carregados de malícia. She´s lost control fala de um fato real, ocorrido quando Curtis testemunhou uma mulher “tendo um piti” nervoso num serviço público e que o marcou muito. Disorder pode ser a trilha definitiva de sua cidade-símbolo da revolução industrial, cheia de imagens (...“no décimo andar, pelas  escadarias abaixo, é uma terra de ninguém”).

                Desilusão com a vida e trabalho, marca registrada do cantor presente em Candidate  (“...vivendo sob suas regras, é tudo o que sabemos”) como também Shadowplay (...”eu deixei eles usarem você para seus próprios fins”) e Insight (“...mas eu não me importo mais, perdi a vontade de querer mais.” ou “nós perdemos nosso tempo”). Sombras de um passado e da infância aparecem nesta última(“...eu me lembro quando éramos jovens”). A interpretação de “New dawn fades” é um pouco mais difícil, parece relatar a experiências pessoais de Ian. Estas são algumas de minhas impressões sobre este grandioso álbum. Não estão todas as canções, mas espero ter atiçado a curiosidade de quem quer conhecer um pouco mais a banda. Saudações!

ENGLISH VERSION
I've never been a big fan of Joy Division. I always thought the band monotonous, down, Ian Curtis a second singer, lugubrious songs. I've always tried to understand why so much admiration for the band's name. But who's to say one cannot change his mind? Some impressions of the band made me change and respect more the Joy name recently ... as for example:
a) They portrayed the Manchester of the 80´s better than any band and the oppression that rested in the proletariat through a whole decade of hardness that would come under the government of Margaret Thatcher;
b) Ian Curtis was into The Doors, but, to me, the first was more poet. Morrison was very high, into hippies lyrics– and many of his poetry became obsolete and attached to 60´s. Joy is more timeless, very little sounds disposable in Curtis´s poems;
c) The whole post-punk generation bass-drums was influenced by them, which is not a little point. Dark themes and timbres were the fuse for the Gothic sound. The industrial drums by Morris, the Hook-inspired bass lines and the mesmerizing, dry guitar by Sumner did not exist before them. Add to that an influence of Kraftwerk and the damage was done-school created for 3 decades of pop music;
d) Themes of solitude, introspection, urban visions, symbols of mass oppression – like nazism-and shattering forces of large cities conquered me. Few bands have managed to sound so innovative in their time, this is the truth.
I stick to the impressions of the letters to write this review, since so much is known of the cover art – which turned out to be a pop icon, the sound and the band's history. I bought the album influenced by statements from the band's 2007 documentary (essential) and the mystery that accompanied the band, many enlightened recently by Deborah Curtis publications and other writers. And I run out for some lyrics from this debut album, as rare are the editions which contain the written.
Day of The Lords brings me back to the Nazis, but also can be the loss of the innocence of youth, youth games filled with malice. She's lost control  speaks of an actual fact, occurred when Curtis witnessed a woman having a nervous breakdown in public service – it surely had an impact on him. Disorder can be the final track of his city-symbol of the industrial revolution, full of images (... "on the 10th floor, the stairs below, is a no man's land"). Disillusionment with life and work, the singer's trademark present in Candidate ("... living under its rules, is all we know") as well as in Shadowplay (... "I let them use you for their own ends") and Insight ("... but I don't care any more, I've lost the will to want more." or "we lost our time"). Shadows of the past and childhood appear in this last ("I remember when we were young"). The interpretation of "New dawn fades" is a little more difficult, apparently reporting the personal experiences of Ian. These are some of my impressions of this great album. Not all of the songs, but I hope to have woken the curiosity of those who want to learn a little more. Greetings!

Cinco álbuns fundamentais(5): Dog man star - Suede (1994).

                Vamos a ele. Particularmente não me é favorita. This hollywood life começa com sax sumindo em fade. The 2 of us é lindíssima balada, minha preferida no álbum junto à “We are the pigs”. Grandiosa.

ENGLISH VERSION

               My last item of 5 fundamental albums, "Dog man star" is the best album of the 90´s besides  Portishead´s second album, another great one. I think only The Verve made an album so phenomenal like this in the Britpop movement.

               Suede had to prove himself in 94 that would be able to continue its course after the traumatic exit of guitarist Bernard Butler during the maturation of the album by personal issues (including the death of his father). Task not easier, however the band had a greatest bandleader in Brett Anderson and found in Richard Oakes - a fan of the band- the figure to assume the task.

               On to the album, now. It's not an album for the masses (like the first), but it's a conceptual album, so to speak. Introducing the band opens the way dark and fast, sharp battery in shades and with metal vocals looking ahead We are the pigs -an ode to chaos (with a simple clip but magnificent) that could very well have been the soundtrack for Qadir in the suburbs of Paris in some point of the years 2000. Heroine has Butler's superb guitar work, too. Some singles are today as the band's greatest hits: The wild ones for example, some people consider the most perfect music. Big ballad with lead vocals from another world to Anderson (who could well have been lyrical singer).Daddy's speeding ´ has very good arrangement and emphasis on keyboards – but not the keyboard work more limp Dick that the band followed after 96. The power is a powerful riff and aided by ropes, remembering very Bowie songs in his pré-rocker phase. Single New generation radio is, well up with striking guitars and drums accurate to call the public to rise in concert. Particularly it is favorite. This hollywood life begins with sax disappearing fade. Is a vigorous rock, with the whole band and thumping a solo. The 2 of us is beautiful ballad, my favorite on the album by the "We are the pigs". Defines something the cover (so to speak). Some bands try to whole life do a ballad like this, without success. Lyrical! "Black or blue" features a climate means The Verve with arrangement which reminds us of the recordings of Scott Walker at the end of the 60 ´ n. Grand. Anyway, Asphalt world (which most fans consider the best song of them) is a masterpiece of harmony/lyrics. With harmonic twists, telling climates on underworld, delirium, prostitution, etc. could be remembered as "Kashmir" in the career of Led Zeppelin. Still life closes the disc so easy, as well as the disc of the band 93: evoking space, couples, serious us Brett Anderson and pompous orchestration. I'm not talking about the letters because the liner notes do not makes it easy, with bad choice of colors/background.

               It is worth mentioning that Suede went on tour after the album release, consolidating its position of masters of Britpop by Europe, which yielded the wonderful dvd called "Introducing the band" with extras that include all the projections to the songs used on live tour, as well as clips and parts of the show´s registry in the North of the continent.

               The cover evokes a mix of Bowie (major influence of the band) with The Smiths, bringing an image of loneliness and eroticism. If you want to know something of the Britpop, go for this piece, and the rest is the rest.  The best band in the 90´s, with a relentless guitarist- although he has not finished the disc- and 90´s best lyricist/singer. They were in Brazil for the Loola festival but I don´t saw them for the price and distance combination. Below, a small collection of imported magazines with Suede  covers.

               Well, with this post I close the series of my five key albums. Not bad. 5 works, 4 foreign bands (one from each decade of the 60´s to 90´s) and a collection of MPB. Eclecticism, as I a\ rgue I. You can't be "closed" only in a decade of music.  There are thousands of interesting works to expand the ear senses. Greetings.

Cinco álbuns fundamentais(4): The game - Queen (1980).

Posteriormente comprei o disco nacional deste meu amigo.

                Falar do grupo é chover no molhado. Prefiro me ater às faixas do disco.

God save the Queen.

ENGLISH VERSION

Another in the series "my 5 fundamental albums", Queen introduced me to rock. They were responsible to made me listen to and consume the style. From a tape from a friend of the time (which does not actually collected vinyls or anything) I got so excited by the music – and later by clips from the album - that I ended up taking the k7 as a gift. And an outworn copy, right? Later I bought the album copy from my friend. Then came other acquisitions of the group who happened to be my favorite since then. I bought all the stuff  until 82´s "Hot Space".
Talking about the group is like “raining in the wet” as we call here in Brazil (rs). There is vast literature about them so the success as one of the greatest bands in history is well documented. I'd rather stick to its tracks. In addition to its explicit 4 hits ("Save me", "Crazy little thing called love", The game" and "Another one bites the dust" - all released with promotional clips) there are other reasons to purchase this album.
Was the first album by the group using synthesizers and started to be germinated in 79, with the composition "Crazy little ...". The band left the histrionic glitter visual of the seventies to enter the 80´s more clean, wearing a badboy look of the 50´s. The cover  is very cool and laminated editions of the album are a must. The band share among themselves the compositions so well distributed, with everyone bringing great songs – and what's best for those who like pop: short songs. If I'm not mistaken, was the first album produced by them as well. Peaked number one in 4 countries.
I'm not going to talk about the successes… "Dragon attack" is a quarry, highlighting the drum & bass work while making room for May pointing his accurate guitar notes. "Need your loving tonight" is one of the “ups” from the record and brings their well-known voice arrangement (also noted in "Sail away sweet sister"). "Coming soon" shows Roger Taylor in a perfect area for support in backing vocals and "Don t ´ try suicide" is one hell of a composition, climate as the title points, with beautiful bass line, guitar interventions with a very nice timbre, a pop chorus and ending in fade. "Rock it" sounds like the least interesting of the disk. All this with great lyrics and melodies well fitted for Mercury great chant (no comments) and 2 superb vocal supports by May and Taylor.
            I remember trying to tap imaginary drums like Roger, I remember the sensational clip of "Save me" – one of the most beautiful of 70´s (and before MTV!) and the harmony blockbuster of "Another one bites the dust" putting my house down -  and proving the band also understood funk rhythm too! My favorite Queen work – that moved the band in order to consolidate their position as one of the most successful in the history of rock. God save the Queen.

Cinco álbuns fundamentais(3): Festival MPB 80 - vols. I e II (1980).

                Well, this pair of discs is also part of my 5 favourite ones (and of most importance) as a music lover. And why?

                The festivals were down during the end of the 70´s, being the last important the so called "Abertura" (1975), which brought Djavan and Luís Melodia to the general public. In 1980 Rede Globo decided to broadcast and invest in a new format with 4 qualifier dates and the grand final in a crowded Maracanãzinho. In 1980 I had not even entered the adolescence and I vaguely remember the playoffs (I think it was on fridays), with a lot of bad music, but many interesting artists. I haven't seen everything but I got to watch some excerpts. How not to remember the strange mood by Eduardo Dusek? And their general wonderful arrangements? Despite not being trully involved with music at the time, the festival snatched the televisions and attention in all country. Too bad I wasn't old enough to attend concerts of that size. But the magic of the artists who subsequently left their mark on our music from this festival is of an amazing quality. Fond memories of a Rio de Janeiro far more interesting than the current. Great personal memories and nostalgia. I'm sorry, modern ones.
                This festival was of fundamental importance for the second generation of MPB - post Tropicalia, Bahia scene and established artists like João Bosco, Gonzaguinha, Fagner, etc. - as it  revealed names like Sandra de Sá - and her powerful soul voice- Eduardo Dusek with his extravaganza and mis-en-scene, the late Jessé- the best male voice in Brazil? (Incidentally, won as best performer with the beautiful and eternal “Porto Solidão"), as well as consolidate artists such as Oswaldo Montenegro -which had already won the third place in Tupi festival in 1979 in duo with partner Jose Alexandre singing "Bandolins"-, Amelinha – which sold 1 million copies with single "Foi Deus que fez você" (a mark that I think no other national female singer achieved), a secure Fatima Guedes , Joice – who returned to Brazil after a career in Japan - and many other artists who had already stablished themselves on the brazilian market such as Guilherme Arantes,  Pepeu/Baby and there we go.

                There is good reasons to purchase the disks: from the hallowed songs that came out in 7´ format and sold a lot to those who didn't get in people's memory but also are phenomenal such "A Massa" – which won third place –, "A festa da carne" (with lyrics from another world!) and "Essa tal criatura" - advocated by Leci Brandão. Such a hardcore work for the jury! In my opinion the final date had at least 7-8 songs with great chances to snatch the first place. Was the last major Festival also with the MPB Shell of 1981. Our music is really the greatest on the planet!
                My mother had purchased the single "Agonia" – winner of the festival and later included to leverage the sales on Osvaldo Montenegro´s album that year - and became even today one of my songs ever. I went to buy this perfect nice pair many years later, at a record marquet in Rio. One of them has just been signed in one night show in Copacabana  by Amelinha! (see photo). I bought also a copy of the extinct “Manchete” magazine´s August 80 edition with a great matter about the festival. I also found a nice report  about the subject on this blog: http://festivalesdempb.blogspot.com.br/search/label/1980 by Evangeline Maffei. Enjoy this great piece of MPB music record, friends.

Scissor´s cut - Art Garfunkel (1981).

Composições de Webb renderam a Garfunkel alguns de seus maiores sucessos, como "All I know" e "Crying in My Sleep". "Hang on in" é pra cima e dançante, mas destoa do resto do repertório...

ENGLISH VERSION

When I sold great part of my collection in 2011, Garfunkel stayed. I have always considered him the more consistent white pop singer from the 70´s. I would highlight, however, other big names such as Barry Manylow. But this is another subject to eclectic tastes, and not only the taste for rock or pop, right?

Art managed his highlights - as everyone knows - in double with Paul Simon, leaving a legacy of songs in American and world subconscious until today. His solo career has its ups and downs, but well consistent for almost a decade after that separation - allying musicians authorities and composers of high caliber from 1973. I have his first 5 solo albums and a collection with Paul Simon, almost obligatory...

This 1981 work is absolutely the best he has produced, although only has generated a single - "A heart in New York" - and far from his more recognized works by both critical and sales. I discovered in Internet notes that this album was recorded soon after the loss of his girlfriend at the time, which led to the romanticism of the songs.

"A heart in New York" was a mark when performed in the famous concert back in Central Park, 1981 - which brought together the famous double and rose a DVD and a double album. The Big Apple was once more sung in “verse and prose” and won another great tribute here. In this work – like others in his career - once again we have the session of songs by fabulous composer Jimmy Webb, which stablished a fruitful partnership back in the “Watermark” album. Compositions of Webb earned Garfunkel some of its greatest successes, such as "All I know" and "Crying in My Sleep". By Webb we have 3 of the strongest here: The title track - which speaks of marital discord and counts with the well placed backing-vocal by Leah Kunkel (who also worked with James Taylor), "In cars" - that evokes the golden era of America (the 50´s, where that generation savored a post-war economic growth and euphoria and where images of the American dream, milk-shakes and dating in drive-ins were very well explored in movies) and 'That's all I got to say", which appears as a movie theme (“The last unicorn”) and really has that childhood aura that refer us to ludic moments. Beautiful. Another highlight is "Bright eyes' - magnificent and sublime and a proof of what a great chorus can make to a song. "Can't Turn My Heart Away" and "So easy to begin" are those calm songs, defended masterfully by Art´s voice of smooth tenor. "Hang on in" is upbeat and dancing, but in disharmony with the rest of playlist...

    The Rolling Stone review gave this work 4 stars back in 81. My copy is from CBS Holland. Another work from him that I can surely highlight - and his best performance in outages - is "Breakaway" from 1975. Good tips for anyone who wants to have a disc to a semi-dark dating and enjoy the best that the American pop music gave us in that era, with fundamental names such as Paul Simon, James Taylor, Carole King, Don McLean among others. Greetings!

Born Sandy devotional - The Triffids (1986).

Tarrilup bridge segue a mesma linha.
O jornal britânico The Guardian deu 4 (em 5 estrelas). Fonte: https://en.wikipedia.org

ENGLISH VERSION

            The Triffids (whose name was inspired by a post-apocalyptic novel) was a group formed by vocals and songwriter David McComb in Perth, Australia, in 1978. The band, who recorded 5 studio albums and numerous EP's ´ throughout its history, had its zenith with this album. This second album - with the band as a sextet after several formations - was recorded in 1985 in London and mixed in Liverpool on the band's attempt to break-out the borders of their country and make into international pop-stardom. This year (in january) the londoner weekly NME had already predicted that they would be the next big thing – as would occur with the Suede in 1993 – whose path to such effort was consolidated by opening for Echo & the Bunnymen and playing in several other famous Europe festivals before the recording of this work.
            The release by record label Rough Trade took place in 1986 catapulted by the single Wide open road that ranked #26 in the UK charts, while the album reached position #27. This particular song is among the 30 biggest (!) Australian songs of all time according to the Australian Association APRA. David McComb died in 1999 (ten years after the end of the band) of complications from a heart transplant alongside  the effects of heroin. He could not see the band included in the Hall of Fame of his country in 2008.
              On the disc, I mention some highlights: in addition to the now classic Wide open road, other interesting tracks are The Seabirds with their beach “mood”, a striking guitar scoring the stanzas and the story of a couple in crisis. Life of crime has exceptional drum/bass work, a theme of climatic arrangement as a film noir and could well have been subject to any documentary or gangster movie;  Stolen property brings a great interpretation by David - it merges at the same time loneliness and confinement, breadth and vastness. Had the german filmmaker Win Wenders awaited more 4 years and would have in this song a beautiful theme for his film "Paris, Texas" (83).; Personal things shows how the Doors have influenced not only the Bunnymen: a great work of Graham Lee and Jill Birt on keyboards, the band remembers the climate present in Doors songs like “People are strange” and drink in the tones of Ray Manzarek. Tender is the night is pointed as a autobiographical song and sung by keyboardist Birt, closing the album.
            Born Sandy devotional - whose title is of a song not included on the album – occupies the 5 (fifth!) position among the 100 best albums of the music industry of Australia (October 2010), which is no small feat with names such as AC/DC and the Midnight Oil between the first 5 on list. The Melody Maker cited that the record was "a classic ... with ten songs about life and love in a hostile sub-tropical landscape" while the NMExpress cited the work as "a classic music to be taken seriously". The Sounds used words like "miracle" or "harmony kisses" in his review and stating that this was by far the most brilliant album for the year of 1986.
            I think only Born... and Calenture were released in Brazil. This 1987 edition is brazilian and belonged to Alpha Radio (from which Brazil state I don´t know) with an “1884” adhesive fixed number typical of radio media files or the like. Alongside the record it comes with the fantastic lyrics sheet and an insert bringing color photos of its members. I had sold my edition in 2011 in what I´ve called “the big dark afternoon” but I thought seriously to buy it again when watching a 2007 documentary series  about the great Australian albums in pop music...
